Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday took to the streets of state capital Shillong to oversee the arrangements made for selling of essential items on the third day of the nation-wide lockdown.

During his tour, Sangma urged people to maintain distance from one another as they queued up for stocking groceries.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed in Shillong on Friday after shops opened to allow people to purchase essential commodities.

Despite the government advisory that only one person from each family is allowed to go out to buy essential items, people in large numbers thronged the streets failing to maintain physical distance.

A large number of vehicles were also seen plying in the city, and the traffic policemen had to force vehicles without valid car passes to return home.

“People need to adhere to the health department guidelines and strictly self isolate themselves in their respective houses to ensure that the State is not in the COVID-19 pandemic map,” a visibly upset local resident, M .Rapthap, said seeing people overcrowding at a store in Laitumkhrah market.

A senior citizen, S Lamare, lambasted the government for not taking action against lockdown violators.

“I don’t know why the police are not taking action against these lockdown violators. It is like any normal Sunday in Shillong with people driving on the road, walking and sitting on the roadside,” Lamare asked.

Ironically, the rural folks appeared more sensible and adhered to the health department guidelines on physical social distancing on Friday when they came out to replenish their essential items.

The Chief Minister admitted that the government has received complaints about citizens not maintaining social distancing in a few locations around the city.

“Physical distancing is so crucial for our safety and for the safety of everyone around us. We need to take a personal initiative and underscore the seriousness of the situation. Please educate everyone around you,” the Chief Minister said.

“Our responsible citizens practiced social distancing at Lumparing, Langkyrding, Mawngap, Mawryngkheng and Keating Road today,” he added.

Urging citizens to cooperate with the authorities, the chief minister reassured that “Food supplies will be enough and there is no need to panic.”

The state government has also initiated measures for online buying of essential items, which would be delivered on the doorsteps of the customers during the period of lockdown.

To ensure that essential commodities are made available to citizens at their doorsteps, especially in urban areas, Chief Secretary M. S Rao said that store.meghamart.com has been activated as an end-to-end essential commodity ordering and delivery platform. Both cash and online payments will be accepted.

The Chinese Communist Party regime headed by President Xi Jinping, which drew flak for its cover up of the coronavirus outbreak, is now being called out for sending and selling faulty medical equipment as “humanitarian aid” to several countries around the world.

Many governments in the last week have complained that China had secretly purchased massive quantities of medical equipment from Europe and is now re-selling the same to European countries as assistance.

A researcher, Filip Jirous at Sinopsis, Aa project implemented by AcaMedia, in collaboration with the Department of Sinology at Charles University in Prague, revealed that last week the Czech authorities confiscated a shipment of medical supplies from a warehouse because a Czech reseller had tried to sell it to the Czech government for an excessive price in the coronavirus pandemic crisis.

The boxes at the warehouse were labelled as Chinese Red Cross humanitarian aid to Italy. The contents included 680,000 face masks, 28,000 respirators and around 100,000 masks.

During the investigation, the police found that the storage unit belonged to an influential Chinese in Prague, Zhou Lingjian. Jirous said Zhou who co-owns the company CTE CARGO Sped linked to CTE International which sold 580,000 masks to the Czech “shell” company, is in charge of the Czech Qingtian Hometown Association, and runs the most prominent Chinese diaspora media Prague Chinese Times.

“His group has been at the forefront of a collection for Qingtian back in February, buying up 780,000 face masks and 30,000 respirators from Czech drug stores. This created suspicion that the material is actually from the local Chinese collection.”

The researcher tweeted that this incident leaves much doubt about the “aid” that is now coming from China to Europe. Especially since much of what is labelled as “aid” is either sales or directed at the overseas Chinese.

Marion Smith, who runs a think-tank in Washington DC tweeted that the “Czech counter espionage agency had reported during January and February that Chinese embassy in Prague organised Chinese interests in the country to purchase massive quantities of Czech medical materials which were immediately sent to China.”

“It is now discovered that China’s humanitarian medical supplies to Czech Republic this month are faulty. 80 per cent of the coronavirus test kits provide false results, mostly false negatives. This deadly aid is a huge element of CCP statecraft right now,” he said.

Not just Czech Republic, but Turkey has also said that the Chinese test kits are substandard and have a 65 to 70 per cent failure rate. Spain has also complained that 80 per cent of medical supplies from China were faulty.

According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is providing “assistance” to 82 countries, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the African Union.

Among the countries it has sent supplies to are Italy, France, Greece, Serbia, Spain, Pakistan, Laos, Thailand, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Cambodia, the Philippines, Egypt, South Africa, Iraq, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Cuba and Chile.

As the world anxiously awaits a possible vaccine to prevent thousands of people getting infected from COVID-19 virus, around 35 pharmaceutical companies and institutes are racing against time to create such a vaccine. At least four such companies, have just begun testing in animals.

The science journal of American Association of Advancement in Science (AAAS) reports that Boston based biotech firm, Moderna Therapeutics is speeding the immunization through an internal safety trial in a joint effort with National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.

The company said that it intends to distribute the vaccine to health care workers by September, this year. Moderna has shared little detail in published papers about the technology it's developing.

This remarkable speed to make a vaccine stems from the early Chinese efforts to grouping the genetic material of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The Chinese medical specialists wasted no time in sharing that sequence to research about gatherings as right on time as January. The cooperation enabled the research companies far and wide to develop the live virus and study how it attacks human cells and makes pepole sick.

In fact Coronaviruses have caused two other recent epidemics — severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) in China in 2002-2004, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers), which began in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Leading english every day Guardian in its report says that "the two cases, work started on vaccines that were later shelved  when the outbreaks were contained. One company, Maryland-based Novavax, has now re-purposed those vaccines for Sars-CoV-2, and says it has several candidates ready to enter human trials this spring.”

Besides, Moderna Therapeutics also built on earlier work on the Mers virus led tests with help of Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in US.

According to the general standards, clinical preliminaries for such vaccines are held in the three unique stages.

The first stage includes testing of vaccines on two or three dozen healthy volunteers to search for its adverse effect and safety.

The second stage is about testing the vaccines on two or three hundred people living in epidemic affected some part of the world to see how powerful is the vaccine.

The third stage is to enlarge the sample which runs into a thousands of many people being tested for effectiveness of the vaccine to battle the disease.

All the companies including Moderna will currently need to experience these stages to finally come with a successful  vaccine for the pandemic.

A Washington-based advocacy group and a Texas company have filed a class-action lawsuit against the Chinese government for the novel coronavirus, demanding $20 trillion compensation for the damages caused by the pandemic.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a conservative lawyer Larry Klayman, his advocacy group Freedom Watch and Buzz Photos, a Texas company that specializes in high school sports photography. The petitioners have accused the Chinese government of developing the novel coronavirus as “an illegal biological weapon”. The complaint has alleged that the virus was “released by the Wuhan Institute of Virology, located in Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus outbreak originated”.
“Although it appears that the COVID-19 virus was released at an unplanned, unexpected time, it was prepared and stockpiled as a biological weapon to be used against China’s perceived enemies, including but not limited to the people of the US,” the complaint said.
The US government has blamed Beijing for the coronavirus pandemic after the Chinese government held American soldiers responsible for bringing the contagious disease to China. The Trump administration pointed out that the Chinese government covered up the outbreak of the virus for a long time and even punished the whistleblowers who tried to expose it.
Klayman has sought compensation from the Chinese government because of its “callous and reckless indifference and malicious acts”. The Chinese people, he said in his complaint, “are a good people, but their government is not and it must be made to pay dearly”.
According to the lawsuit, Buzz Photos company lost roughly $50,000 last weekend due to school closures and sports cancellations and has been forced to lay off workers. “There is no reason why the American taxpayer should, contrary to the establishment in Washington, D.C., have to pay for the tremendous harm caused by the Chinese government,” Klayman said in a statement on his website.
