Move To Make Paikan-Tura-Dalu Into Four Lane International Road

State’s proposal accepted by Centre

TURA: Setting its sight on boosting international trade with Garo Hills as its epicenter, Meghalaya Chief Minister has announced that a proposal has been given to the union government for expansion of the national highway into a four lane road beginning at Paikan in Assam, passing through Tura before touching Dalu international border in West Garo Hills.

“Few days back , Tura MP Agatha K Sangma wrote to the union government and submitted a proposal to convert the national highway NH-51 Paikan-Tura-Dalu into a four lane road. This will boost the economy of our state because it will act as a corridor for movement of goods to and fro Chittagong port in Bangladesh with neighbouring countries, for example, Bhutan and Nepal," educated the central priest while talking uninvolved of the establishment stone laying service for the P A Sangma Integrated Sports Complex at Tura within the sight of Agatha Sangma on Wednesday.

He revealed that the proposal of the Tura MP has been accepted in principle and the same communicated to him by the centre, a few days ago.

The chief minister indicated that once the road is completed there would be a huge boom in trade and commerce and the people of the region would be immensely benefited.

He said that there will be immense job opportunities for the people of the region since all trade would pass through the route making it an immensely important commercial region.

It is worth mentioning that NH-51 (Tura-Paikan-Dalu) and NH-62 (Dudhnoi-Damra-Rongjeng-Baghmara) roads have recently been renamed as NH-217 connecting all the above mentioned places.

“Since the time of our MDA government came into being we have been focusing on the delivery mechanism. If you look into the progress of roads, statistics will reveal that in the last 17 years only 1600 kms of PMGSY roads have been completed in the region, whereas during the last two years of the MDA government we have seen to the completion of 800 km of the PMGSY roads. This is difference in governance,” claimed the chief minister.

He also said that Rs 700 crore is being earmarked under the new financial year to boost and expand rural tourism in the state for which funds have been set aside by the BRICS Bank (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
